A severe snowstorm has been hitting parts of Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido.
The Meteorological Agency warns that the prefecture’s Sea of Japan side may experience the worst blizzard in several years. It is calling on people to refrain from going outside.
A man in his 20s was confirmed dead on Friday after being found unconscious in the suburbs of Tomakomai. He was dispatched there to rescue a driver who had become stuck in the snow.
In the town of Shari, a bus carrying about 40 high school students got stuck on the shoulder of a road on Thursday. One student suffered a slight injury.
A total of 320 vehicles were temporarily stranded in the prefecture on Thursday.
