Since the beginning of the season, there has been an upward trend in human-caused fires compared to the average of the last 10 years, according to the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU).

Since April, 250 fires have burned 2,800 hectares of forest, and 97 per cent of them were caused by humans.

As the summer holidays begin, SOPFEU calls for caution among campers. Each year, about 50 fires occur due to a campfire that is not properly extinguished or left unattended.

The organization is asking the public to respect safety rules, including ensuring that a campfire is completely extinguished.

As for fireworks, set them off away from wooded areas and clear away any items that could catch fire.
