Rwanda’s Ministry of Disaster Management (MIDIMAR) said that at least 18 people have died in the last 24 hours (23 to 24 April, 2018) as a result of floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain.
Among the worst hit areas is Gasabo district in Kigali, close to the nation’s capital. Disaster officials said that as many as 8 people have died as a result of heavy rain that fell overnight.
MIDIMAR said that seven deaths also occurred in Rulindo district, Northern Province, where heavy rain triggered a landslide that buried houses. Three more deaths were reported in Gatsibo District, Eastern Province.
